Fiertel - Ronse

Celebration of Saint-Hermes:

In the Middle Ages, mentally ill people from all over the country came on pilgrimage to Ronse to find healing from their patron Saint Hermes. The condition for receiving that healing was a physical effort in return. This is how the Fiertelommegang was born, an annual day trip of 32.6 kilometers. The Fiertelommegang was added to the list of intangible cultural heritage of Flanders in 2009. Further steps are now being taken to make the Fiertel a world heritage site.
